Are you a lawyer?

If you’re a lawyer and you want to help by providing pro bono help to sponsorship groups, there are two ways to get involved.
Please note that SSP Pro Bono Lawyers may not charge fees for any sponsorship support services offered using SSP resources or benefiting from SSP training. This is a strictly pro bono program.

1) If you are in one of our programming centres (Ottawa, WindsorToronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Vancouver, Victoria, Halifax, and New Brunswick) – please join us as an SSP pro bono lawyer. Even if you don’t have experience in immigration and refugee law, you can help. The SSP provides custom training and expert support throughout the sponsorship process. (This program is coming very soon to other centres!)

To get started, visit your city’s web page. Send your lawyer coordinator an email indicating your interest and they will provide you with next steps. Also, be sure to check your city’s page to see if there are any upcoming training sessions:

SSP Ottawa SSP Windsor SSP Toronto

SSP Calgary SSP Vancouver SSP Victoria

SSP Edmonton SSP Red Deer SSP Halifax

SSP New Brunswick SSP Kingston

2) If you not in one of our programming centres AND not in Quebec* – please send an email to refugeessp@uottawa.ca and ask to be added to the Sponsorship Support Lawyer List. In this email, please indicate (1) what city you are in; (2) if you are an immigration and refugee lawyer or from another part of the bar; and (3) if you have any sponsorship experience. Once you have been added, you will also be given access to the online training that is available on this website. Our list currently contains over 30 pro bono lawyers across Canada, recruited largely by the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers and the Canadian Bar Association.

* If you live in Quebec, please note that the sponsorship process is different and the SSP unfortunately cannot train pro bono lawyers to offer support in that province. Some useful organizations to consult if you’d like to get involved include Action Réfugiés Montréal and the TCRI.
